General Information

Public Health – a popular specialty of American and European universities, which recently appeared in Ukraine and was originally licensed in only two (!) universities. Its emergence was due to the need for medical reform, building a national public health system based on the principle of “health in all state policies” as well as training new staff in the field of intersectoral management.

The Department of Public Health was established in July 2017 on the basis of the Faculty of Political Information Management. The program trains a new generation of specialists for public administration, local government, health care, business entities of various forms of ownership, including non-governmental organizations in the field of public health, which would contribute to the improvement and implementation of public policy and public administration. It is aimed at addressing issues related to the demographic crisis, increasing morbidity, disability and mortality among the population, significant public stratification in access to health care service, low economic efficiency of health care, dissatisfaction of a large part of citizens with the state of health care and protection of patients' rights. Also, the program is called to develop intersectoral and intersectoral cooperation in Ukraine’s public health on the national basis “health care in all policies”.

Specifics of Educational Programs

Bachelor

Field of knowledge – 22 Healthcare
Specialty – 229 Public Health

The purpose of the educational program of the first (bachelor’s) level of higher education 229 Public Health is to prepare a specialist who is able to solve complex theoretical and practical problems in public health on the basis of acquired theoretical knowledge, skills, and other competencies in order to solve complex problems in the field of professional activity. The program also includes the methodology for assessing risks to life and health of the population at the individual and population levels.

Master

Field of knowledge – 22 Healthcare
Specialty – 229 Public Health

The purpose of the educational program of the second (master’s) level of higher education 229 Public Health is to prepare professionals for independent research, teaching and learning activities in the field of public health, who are able to solve complex issues and problems in this area. It acquires general and special competencies in organizational, managerial, expert, control-analytical, project, research activities, including on health promotion and implementation of the national basis “health care in all state policies” at all levels of government at the national, regional, local, and public levels.

Employment and Career Opportunities:

Areas of preventive medicine, health care management, medical law and bioethics, health economics, ecology and environmental protection, social security and public services, activities in the social information (communication) sphere.

Research Centers and Workshops

• Research Center “Human Ecology and Public Health” (Head – Ihor Hushchuk, Doctor of Medicine, Associate Professor). The main goal of the center is to promote the development of Ukrainian public health system, the implementation of fundamental and applied research in order to study and assess both the risks and the negative factors in the human environment.
• Research Center for Innovative and Non-Invasive Technologies in Health Care (Head – Yuriy Liakh, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor). The center is a research, diagnostic, preventive, and educational structure of the National University of Ostroh Academy.
• Scientific workshop “Human Ecology” (Head – Ihor Hushchuk, Doctor of Medicine, Associate Professor).
• Scientific workshop “Correction of Negative Mental States in the Practice of a Specialist in the Field of Public Health” (Head –Anna Hilman, PhD, Senior Lecturer).
• Scientific workshop “Features of Palliative and Hospice Care” (Head – Natalia Kulesha, PhD, Senior Lecturer).

Partners

Students of Public Health have the opportunity to participate in national credit mobility on the basis of agreements, in particular between the Department and the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (School of Public Health), Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University, Institute of Public Health of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Sumy State University, etc.

Also, students can participate in Erasmus + international academic mobility programs on the basis of cooperation agreements between the Department and Masaryk University (Brno), The Institute of Public Health of the Jagiellonian University (Krakow). The department also the Military Medical Institute (Warsaw).
