Guest lecture within the HEUS project: ‘On the importance of spelling names and free movement in the EU’

On 26 March, the National University of Ostroh Academy hosted a guest lecture ‘Spelling of Names, Free movement and EU citizenship - what challenges for migrant families?' within the HEUS grant project.

The speaker, Dr Egle Dagilyte, is an Associate Professor of European Law and Society at the University of England (Ruskin, UK).

The project is aimed at an in-depth study of European law and society and gathered about 60 participants, including students of the National University of Ostroh Academy, teachers and guests from other higher education institutions of Ukraine.

During the meeting, the speaker revealed important aspects and challenges related to the rules of spelling names in different countries of the European Union and their impact on the rights and freedoms of citizens.

She focused on issues related to identity and name in the context of border crossing and legal documentation in the EU.

In particular, Dr Egle Dagilyte drew attention to the analysis of situations where national language rules collide with problems arising from the free movement of persons within the European Union, in particular in the neighbouring countries of Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine.

All participants had the opportunity to understand the complex legal issues related to free movement within the EU and its impact on the spelling of names. Illustrative examples and analysis of real-life situations helped to better understand the complexities and possible solutions to such problems.
