The statement of the Academic Council and the Student Brotherhood of the National University of Ostroh Academy on the adoption of the draft Law On the Principles of State Language Policy

We believe that the draft Law On the Principles of State Language Policy, adopted with massive violations of the regulations, does not contribute to the consolidation of the Ukrainian nation. On the contrary, it disunites Ukrainians on grounds of language. Moreover, it contradicts the Constitution of Ukraine, the European Charter for Regional Languages or Minority Languages and leaves the suggestions of the Venice Commission concerning the protection of Ukrainian as the State Language out of account.

Unfortunately, the language situation in Ukraine has been and still remains a pre-election technology of political organizations, which has been proven once again by the Ukrainian members of Parliament.

Therefore, the adoption of this law will result in the exclusion of Ukrainian from all spheres of social, public and academic life, it will open the way to the linguistic isolation and alienation of Ukraine's regions and will lead to the decline of the Ukrainian nation and fragmentation of Ukraine as a state.

The Academic Council and the Student Brotherhood of the National University of Ostroh Academy appeals to the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the President of Ukraine against the speculative draft Law On the Principles of State Language Policy requesting that they do not sign it, as it contradicts the Constitution of Ukraine and threatens the unity and sovereignty of our country.
