September 08, 2016
The Victory in the Battle of Orsha was commemorated in Ostroh on 8 September. On this day in 1514 a large-scale battle between the united army of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland and the army of Tsardom of Muscovy took place near town Orsha, which is located on the Dnipro river. The commander-in-chief of the united army was Ukrainian Prince Kostiantyn Ivanovych of Ostroh whose residence was situated in Ostroh.
Dr. Ihor Pasichnyk notified that it is vital for Ukrainians to remember their victories, especially nowadays when the nation should unite in common and selfless work for the benefit of our country:
«We must understand the importance of the victory of the talented commander Kostiantyn of Ostroh. Being outnumbered, he managed to defeat the powerful enemy. His unbreakable will and unstoppable struggle brought splendid result — the enemy was completely defeated. The new generation of Ukrainians can take the example of this outstanding historical figure»
The wall of banners, which contain the information about military achievements of Prince Kostiantyn of Ostroh, was opened at Ostroh Academy to celebrate the Day of the Victory in the Battle of Orsha.
Mykola Bedniuk, the art historian of Ostroh academy, told more details about the battle and described the pictures placed on the banners.
Ostroh academy students and faculty are convinced that the strength consists in unity and that only if Ukrainians unite spiritually, they will win and restore territorial unity of Ukraine. Therefore, it is very important that the topic of the Victory in the Battle of Orsha gets enough coverage, because at that time the Ukrainians, the Belorussians, the Poles and the Lithuanians stood side-by-side and managed to endure and win. In the same way we can achieve our goal only if we unite and arm ourselves with the power of spirit.
