September 18, 2008
Famous Canadian-Ukrainian sponsors of Ostroh Academy Yarmila and Erast Hutsuliak were inaugurated the titles of Honorary Academicians of Ostroh Academic Fellowship.
Mr. Hutsuliak was rewarded with the highest honour, silver medal Prince Vasyl-Kostiantyn Ostrozkyi for his contribution to the restoration of Ostroh Academy. His wife, Yarmila-Delores Buka-Hutsuliak, who supported her husband’s initiative and helped him also became the Honorary Academician and was rewarded with the same medal as well.
At the meeting with the students Erast Hutsuliak presented his book of memoirs My Wooden Valise, where he described the main episodes of the Ukrainian history, especially the process of formation of the independent Ukraine at the beginning of 1990s, in which he participated. As the rector of Ostroh Academy noted, it is a paradox of our country that the names of such people as Erast Hutsuliak are not mentioned by mass media and in the Ukrainian history.
“Ostroh Academy educates people who will become the leaders of the Ukrainian nation, they will influence its future economic, cultural and political life. I think that this university deserves more not only from me, but others as well. I will appeal to the prosperous people of Ukraine to become sponsors of this educational establishment,” said Mr. Hutsuliak during the meeting.
